Oracle
April 2026

In April 2026, I’ll present an exhibition of portable, interactive “oracle” books. Each book consists of a cover with four pockets creating space for four 4”x4” pages, which you can see below.
If you choose to procure one, you pick the cover and the four pages you want to populate your book. Like a Rorschach test, you cannot get it wrong. Impulsive choices will reveal their connections over time.
The idea for creating this portable art came from imagining the experiences of a displaced person seeking comfort in an unfamiliar situation. I thought: “what if we could pull art off the wall, and carry it in our pockets, in case of emergency?”
Such art would need to have a relationship with its owner and it would need to be exploratory: versatile enough to provide meaning to different people and in a variety of situations, as well as physically engaging enough for a nervous fidgiter.
My inspirations were varied: geodes and books, that you crack open to discover mysteries inside; oracle cards and heart candies that deliver cryptic or suggestive messages; and photo albums and junk drawers that provide opportunities for rummaging about inside.
The images, designs, patterns and symbols on these small pages are pulled from my sketch books. To me, they address universalities and shared human experiences, as well as images and ideas that just keep rattling around in my head.
The book covers and pages are made with acid-free and archival papers, inks, paints and dyes, with the exception of a few found objects: some corrugated cardboard, a photo or two, and a rusty paperclip.
Pages that have sold say so in the item description.
